Publications

There are only a few scholars that I know of that have published studies on Tagore settings and Tagore’s influence on Western style composers. The below table aims at providing an overview of these publications, including those focusing on one composer’s settings in particular. Also included are some publications on Rabindra Sangeet.

The second table contains publications on Tagore on a more general level. An interesting overview of all publicly held Tagore related publications, both by and on, is available on Worldcat: http://www.worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n80-36680

Some of the authors were closely befriended with Tagore. Here some notes on a few.

Arnold A. Bake (Netherlands, 1899-1963) studied at Visvabharati University with Pandit Bhim Rao Shastri in the 1920s. While there, Bake undertook the task to transcript Tagore’s songs into western music notation, published by and available from the MusĂ©e Guimet in Paris. Bake gave many lectures in Europe, performing Tagore’s songs, and travelled a lot across colonial India to study its local musical culture. His many recordings are preserved at the SOAS, University of London.

It consists of publications on Tagore in general.

My husband’s mentor was Arnold Bake, who died in 1963, not 1961. We published a restudy of his research on local music in Karnataka, Tamilnadu, and Kerala. His recordings and ours are preserved at the Archives and Research Centre for Ethnomusicology (ARCE) of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), in Gurgaon, as well as in UCLA’s Ethnomusicology Archive, where we are still work on the materials in a digital library project. I consider it to be a natural outgrowth of Bake association with Tagore, and found evidence of Tagore’s participation in the Tagore Archives last year. Thank you Eric for your excellent work. Amy
